Training and Assessment Pathway
This program is delivered through a structured blended delivery model that combines classroom-based learning, face-to-face instruction, formal theory assessment and supervised workplace application in operational rail environments.
Stage 1: Classroom Learning and Theory Assessment
You will begin with face-to-face classroom training, where you develop the underpinning safeworking knowledge and operational awareness required of a Locomotive Driver’s Assistant. During this stage, you will work through the relevant units, participate in facilitated learning, and complete the theory assessments that confirm your understanding of procedures, communication, signalling, shunting, train protection and emergency response. Duties commonly associated with the role include assisting the driver with locomotive preparation, observing signals and hand signals, supporting train movements and maintaining effective communication in safety-critical environments. Stage 2: On-the-Job Workbook and Practical Assessments
Once you have successfully completed the theory component, you will be issued an On-the-Job Workbook to guide your practical assessments in an operational workplace. This workbook sets out the tasks, behaviours and evidence requirements you must demonstrate while working in live rail operations.
You will complete these activities under supervision, applying what you have learned in the classroom to real-world train operations, locomotive preparation, observation of signals, communication protocols, shunting activities and operational safety requirements. The workbook is designed to capture a substantial body of workplace evidence showing that you can perform these duties consistently, safely and in accordance with operational standards. Locomotive Driver’s Assistants typically support safe train operation through signal observation, radio monitoring, fault reporting, assisting with pre-start checks and shunting movements. Stage 3: Workplace Facilitation and Validation
Facilitation of the on-the-job component is typically delivered in an experiential training environment, with you working alongside experienced company personnel. In many cases, your employer’s own Trainers, supervisors or designated workplace trainers will support you through the practical activities, provide guidance and confirm that your performance meets operational expectations.
When your workbook is complete and your employer is satisfied that you have reached the required level of workplace competence, your On-the-Job Workbook and supporting evidence will be reviewed and validated by an SCRT Trainer/Assessor as part of the overall competency decision. Competency-based train-driving environments also emphasise maintaining situational awareness, workplace safety and current operational knowledge as part of safe performance. [web:702]
