Course Description
This certificate course is prepared to meet requirements with the Work Cover 'Work Near Overhead Power Lines' Code of Practice.
Commonly referred to as 'Spotter'/Electrical Observer. This course provides for the accreditation of non-electrical workers operating or observing the operation of:
- cranes,
- trucks,
- plant or
- vegetation control activities
in close proximity to potentially live electrical apparatus such as:
- overhead power lines and
- railway electrical overhead traction systems.
This course does not cover underground cables/services.
Course content will include but is not limited to:
• Basics of electricity
• Electrical generation and distribution systems
• Types of electrical conductors and insulators
• Estimating levels of voltage in overhead powerlines
• Single wire earth returns (SWER)
• How to assess and control electrical risk
• Safety Observer's & their role
• Electrical work permits, authorities and legislation
• Safe work Go/No/Go zones
• Vegetation control
• Reporting incidents
• Relevant Codes of practice
• CPR

Requirements
Participants are required to:
• Hold a valid USI (Unique Student Identifier) – can be created at www.usi.gov.au
• Provide 100 points of identification
• Be able to read, write, understand and speak English to a level that allows full participation in training and assessment
Age Requirements
Persons over the age of 18 years old.
Dress Requirements
Clothing & Footwear
• Plain, casual clothing must be worn. No singlets are allowed.
• Enclosed shoes must be worn. PPE is not required. No thongs allowed.

Assessment
Participants are required to successfully complete both a Written Assessment, which tests their understanding of the key learning elements, and Practical Assessments, which require them to demonstrate the required performance criteria.
Competence in both the written and practical components is required to achieve a successful outcome in this course.
